The BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150), the Lead Ship of the Jose Rizal class Guided Missile Frigates recently made history again when it became the very first Vessel in the entire History of the Philippine Navy (PN) to fire a Purpose-built Anti-Ship Missile that was shown to the Public.
The PN had previously fired Spike Extended Range (ER) and Spike Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) Missiles from its Vessels several times already through the last several Years, but these were General or Multi-Purpose Missiles that were being used in the Naval Role, not one that has been purposely designed and built as an Anti-Ship Missile like the C-Star Missile that the BRP Rizal fired.
The C-Star went on and was visually confirmed to have hit its Target, the decommissioned and former BRP Lake Caliraya (AO-81) Replenishment Tanker. The C-Star Missile weighs 792 kg, has a range of at least 180 km and flies at a speed of Mach 0.95.
It uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) for Mid-Course Guidance, and when it is near its Target it goes into an “Active Radar Homing (ARH)” Mode where it activates its own Radar to find and attack its Target.
So the PN finally goes deeper into its own “Missile Age” in 2024, a bit late but then again, better Late than Never.
