Philippine Army Artillery Forward Observers seen using portable Laser Rangefinders

The 8th Field Artillery "Final Option" Battalion of the Army Artillery Regiment (AAR) of the Philippine Army (PA) recently conducted a Live Fire Exercise (LFE) and Forward Observer (FO) Training in Sulu, and during these Activities, some Troops were seen using what seems like Portable, Handheld Laser Rangefinders.

As the Name of these Devices imply, they send out low-power, non-harmful Laser Beams, usually in the Infra-Red (IR) Spectrum so they are not visible to the Naked Eye, to a Target and then measure the time it takes to get there and for its reflection to get back to the Device to calculate a very accurate reading of the Distance to the Target from the Laser.

The Data then helps improve the accuracy of Artillery Units as they can now make calculations based on more Readings. There are other Optical Devices that can calculate Ranges also, but the Laser Rangefinders are the most accurate and easiest to use.

These Laser Rangefinders can also help improve the effectiveness of the Artillery Units as there is no more or at least less need to send Shots to the Target to be used for Trial and Error corrections, and thus the Element of Surprise during the first shots from the Artillery Units is preserved and can catch the Enemies off guard.
