Rumors of China and US regularly conducting Electronic Warfare Battles near the Philippines

There are persistent Rumors about China and the United States (US) regularly doing Electronic Warfare (EW)Battles” in the South China Sea (SCS) near the Philippines recently. From what I can tell, this seems to have started at least late last Year of 2023, and since then a number of such Incidences has supposedly occurred.

This is of course unofficial as no Government Official from the Countries involved or surrounding Countries like ours has spoken about it. For me though, these “Battles” sort of make sense as they are generally non-lethal in nature, just a Way for each Side to ruffle the other Sides’ Feathers.

It’s like the US would tell China, “F. you!!!” and starts jamming Signals. Then China would respond back with “F. you, too!!!” and does their own Signal Jamming. I would imagine that both Sides are only using low level Jamming so as not to give the other Side too much Information about their true Capabilities.

The latest one reportedly occurred in late last Month of June of 2024, and the News was even picked up by Taiwanese Media, like “CTI News” whose Video about it got over 320,000 Views already on YouTube. It’s in Mandarin, though, somebody tell the Taiwanese Media to include English Translations also of their Videos so English Speakers like us can join in on the Conversation.

Anyway, here is a Version of what supposedly happened recently. There are several Versions with minor differences since these are just unofficial and no Government wants to confirm it:

It all reportedly started when the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) retrieved a Sonobouy that was dropped by a P-8 Poseidon Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Aircraft of the US Navy (USN). A Sonobouy by the Way is an expendable, floating, sounding Device that is used to hunt down Submarines.

The US is said to have then sent several Naval Vessels to try to disrupt or stop the CCG's Operation. In response, China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) sent their Type 002 Shandong Aircraft Carrier which just happened to be near the Area to support the CCG.

The US responded back by sending their RC-135 Reconnaissance Aircraft escorted by an EA-18G Growler EW Aircraft. In response to that, China sent their own EW Aircraft, a Version of the Y-9. China has several Versions of the Y-9, not sure exactly which one they sent.

The Encounter reportedly lasted for 12 hours, and during this time both Sides were trying to jam each other electronically. As sort of "Collateral Damage", the Standoff caused some disruptions in the Electromagnetic Emissions in the northern Part of the Philippines, affecting Devices that use Wireless Communications and Navigation like Global Positioning System (GPS) Devices, Radar Facilities, Radio Communications, etc.

Now most of the Items above have been confirmed by the International Press, like the CCG retrieving Sonobuoys from a USN Poseidon Aircraft, for example, or the Shandong transiting near the Philippines. I even saw some Accounts on Twitter reporting the Flight Paths of the RC-135 Aircraft in the SCS.

But they all have been reported separately, and not within the Context of an EW Battle between Superpowers. Only the EM disruption Event in the northern Philippines seems unconfirmed, I haven’t seen any reports about it so far.

Note that while the Taiwanese Media seems to have taken these reports seriously, the Incident is not being reported in the Philippine Press at all.
