The Middle Eastern Country of Egypt has reportedly rejected the United States' (US) offer to modernize their old F-16 Fighting Falcon Aircraft to Block 70/72 Standard, and has instead now signed a Contract to acquire the J-10C Menglong (or Vigorous Dragon) Fighter Aircraft from China to replace those F-16 Aircraft.
The Contract was reportedly signed last Month of August 2024, although no other Details yet like the Quantity has been mentioned about it. Egypt will now be the second Export Customer of the J-10, the first one was Pakistan.
Egypt is just one of several Countries in the Middle East like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who are slowly moving away from the US and closer to China. Egypt currently operates around 168 F-16 Aircraft as per the 2024 Flight International World’s Air Forces, and if they do replace all those with the J-10 on a one for one Basis, then that will mean a significant order for the J-10, the biggest Export Order so far as Pakistan had only acquired around 25 of the Aircraft.
Egypt also has reportedly turned down offers from Russia to replace their F-16s with more Mig-29 Fighter Aircraft because of their negative experiences with the Mig-29. Egypt currently operates around 31 Mig-29s.
The J-10 is China’s Main single engine Fighter Aircraft which is mostly if not all made in China and equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar. It is also armed with China’s most advanced Missiles like the PL-10 short-range, High Off Boresight (HOBS) Air to Air Missile, and the long-range PL-15 Air to Air Missile which has similar capabilities to the Meteor Missile of the West.
Egypt will likely receive the Export Version of the J-10C which is the J-10CE.
